Situated in God’s own country, the client expressed the need to design a spacious 3 bedroom house tucked into the landscape of a rubber tree plantation. Restricting the house to one level, the spaces within were categorised as private, semi-private and informal. As a starting point, we looked at the possibility of interspersing closed and open spaces as pockets of green to become a part of the indoor space instead of exclusively step-out green spaces.
The scheme includes the design of two courtyards to draw in natural light and ventilation. The client was inclined to a contemporary and minimal aesthetic comprising of stark whites and wooden tones. This idea was extended to the external facade of the house as well with a long, unadorned facade punctured by a square cut out to break the monotony. A sloping roof was incorporated keeping in mind the Kerala monsoons, and with the intent to create an attic space for storage.
